I recently learned a couple of tough lessons while fighting a cold which turned into a sinus infection. I learned that solopreneurs don’t get sick days. Maybe a sick afternoon, but that’s about it. Another lesson I learned from being sick is to stop trying to conquer the world after getting 6 hours of sleep. Sleep deprivation and those horrible sinus infections seem to go hand-in-hand for me. But the message I’m trying to share is how blogging is like a wedding vow. You know the one…”in sickness and in health.” Yep.
Blogging while sick is like trudging through mud. With boots on. Uphill. I took to the Internet in an effort to find inspiration. Trust me, there are hundreds of blogs out there about blogging. There are also hundreds of blogs about coming up with ideas when you’ve hit a wall - like when you’re sick. With blogging, I’ll pick “in health” anytime, but I understand I may not always have that option (much like the wedding vow). What to do? Here are some excellent suggestions I received from others who continue blogging…in sickness and in health.
- Working is possible from your couch or bed. As long as you can stay awake!
- Give in to your urge to sleep and rest. You are more likely to recover completely and get back to blogging sooner.
- Take a day off, go for a walk or take a bath. Whatever works for you to get those creative juices flowing.
- Write about being sick. Go on, you’re among friends…at least virtually. Your friends are the ones who will listen and send you well-wishes. You can also tell everyone about your ailment through blogging. One of the best things is you don’t have to worry about being contagious. Viral is fine.
- Ask for help. Sometimes we just can’t do everything on our own. Hopefully you have a network to turn to in those times when you’re going to be out of commission for a while. Blogging can take a backseat - but being able to turn to others for guest posts or blogging in your place is a good option, too.
My good news is I am blogging “in health” again, thanks to some extra sleep and antibiotics. Have you ever had to work or keep blogging “in sickness”? I’d love to hear what has worked for you!

Great post, Jenn! This is the pro AND con of being a solopreneur or someone who works from home. I feel so guilty if I’m sick (or just overworked and tired) if I’m laying in bed with the computer in the other room. 95% of the time I’m in bed WITH the computer or phone. The down side of that is that only 5% of the time I’m really allowing myself to rest and for my body to make the essential repairs it needs to get better.
What’s the “right” answer? I don’t know! I’m sure it’s somewhere in between (say 50%).
Thanks, Brooke (and thanks for being part of my blog inspiration with your suggestion on my FB post!) Like you, there is no right or wrong…but listening to your internal instincts when you feel sick is probably the best thing to do. Sadly, the work doesn’t go away, but it’s a lot easier to do after feeling better! I appreciate your comments & insights!
I always say that the greatest and the worst part about doing most of my work online is that I can, for the most part, work anywhere anytime. True for most bloggers as well.
But, I think it is very important to remember that just because one can work while sick, doesn’t mean one should. I think, if at all possible, it is best to take sometime off while sick. Illness is your body saying it is having a problem. Life is short. It’s worth taking time off to heal.
I agree with you, Gina…taking time to heal is essential! There are times I’ve composed emails or reports while sick and should have just waited. The words that seemed meaningful when I was sick did not make as much sense when I read them later.
Thanks for your comments, I really appreciate it!
